"L/C Wood was commanding a section when his pl, defending a vital locality in the Anzio beachhead was heavily attacked by the enemy on 17th April 1944. In his initial onslaught the enemy succeeded in gaining a footing in his section position, but in close hand-to-hand fighting every German was either killed or wounded; L/c Wood himself accounting for 3. When the enemy renewed his attack later in the day L/c Wood was wounded, but he continued in comd of his section, and controlled and directed their fire to such good effect that the enemy's determined and persistent efforts to gain a foothold in his position were completely frustrated. Only when it was clear that the enemy had finally abandoned his attack did L/c Wood retire to the Coy HQ to have his wound dressed, but; refusing to go to the RAP he took comd of a 2" Mortar group and continued to harass the enemy with well directed fire. Throughout the day L/c Wood showed a skill, courage and devotion to duty which was an inspiration to all."
