    Biography

Lived in The Hague, Stortenbekerstraat 115. Son of Hendrik Wilhelm Hölzel and Alberta Antonia Philips. Married to Alberdina Petronella Bevelander. (Truck) driver/waiter/baker's assistant. Resists. He was a member of the banned Communist Party of the Netherlands. On September 10, 1941, he was arrested by the SD because he was in possession of an illegal newspaper. Rudi Harthoorn (Dirty war in The Hague. Combating the communist resistance during the German occupation) describes his arrest as the rounding up of the Vonk group. Hölzel was deported from Camp Amersfoort to Buchenwald concentration camp. He arrived there on March 31, 1942. He had 'Häftlingsnummer' 2195. Together with Dirk Deutekom (born December 1, 1895 Amsterdam) he ended up in Neuengamme on June 6, 1944. He was deployed to the sick barracks. In November 1944, Hölzel and Deutekom were given the task of caring for twenty Jewish children. The physician Kurt Heiszmeyer (December 26, 1905 - August 29, 1967) used them as guinea pigs for experiments with tuberculosis bacilli. When traces had to be erased shortly before the liberation, the two caregivers were hanged in the basement of the Bullenhuser Damm school, together with two French doctors and the children. There are various statements regarding the date of death. According to the Neuengamme Totenbuch, Hölzel was killed on April 20, 1945. The municipality's death certificate A1015/1948 also mentions that date. The War Graves Foundation, on the other hand, mentions April 21, 1945, while Harthoorn and the Honor Roll of the Fallen give April 19, 1945 as the date of death. He was cremated in the crematorium of Neuengamme concentration camp. The ashes were scattered over the fields around the camp site on April 22, 1945.
