Biography

Percy McCorriston moved to Winnipeg at an early age and attended Gladstone School. While still young he worked with his father delivering for Winnipeg Paint and Glass by horse and buggy.
He served in the Second World War with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and was decorated by King George VI at Buckingham Palace with the Military Medal. After the war Percy joined the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1946, retiring as a Captain in 1983.
McCorriston was a longtime member of the Fort Garry Legion.

"At CARPIQUET AIRFIELD on 4 Jul 44, when his pl comd had become a casualty, this NCO assumed comd of the pl, rallied the disorganised group of men by moving calmly from sec to sec under incessant shell-fire and captured the pl objective.

Again, when shelling and mortar fire had reduced and disorganised his pl, A/L/Sgt McCorriston reorganised his men and, on orderrs from his coy comd, withdrew to a posn in res.

Throughout this campaign this NCO has manifested outstanding qualities of leadership, gallantry and devotion to duty. He is recommended accordingly."
