He has distinguished himself by courageous conduct in the face of the enemy in Janaury 1944, while on a train with Dutch officers who had been made prisoners of war, by jumping from the moving train and reaching Budapest by way of the Carpathians. Furthermore in Budapest, after Hungary had been occupied by the Germans in March 1944, having served the Dutch and the Allied cause as much as possible in a tactful way and frequently under trying and hazardous circumstances. Finally by leaving Budapest in December 1944, flying to southern Italy with Hungarian deserters; ultimately reaching England in mid March 1945 and reporting to the Dutch government.
