Citation:
"For heroic achievement on 13 April 1945, near Barby, Germany, in action against an enemy of the United States. Sergeant Gourley heroically risked his life in order to rescue three seriously wounded men. Despite the fact that enemy heavy artillery fire was landing all around him, he dismounted from his tank and ran one hundred and fifty yards to an American Antiaircraft emplacement which had been knocked out. With the aid of another crew member he carried three seriously wounded men back to his tank and administered first-aid. His devotion to duty and disregard for his own personal safety reflect great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest military traditions."
