During the night 23/24 May 1944, after the break through the ADOLF HITLER Line, "A"Coy of the West Nova Scotia Regiment was consolidated at MR 724178. The Coy position was heavily counter-attacked by the enemy and many of the Coy were either wounded or captured by the enemy.

F-39668 Cpl. Russel Theodore KcKinnon evaded capture and on his own initiative organized the defence of the main road through the Coy's objective. He personally killed a considerable number of the enemy and very effectively prevented the enemy from using the road. This non-commissioned officer's initiative and agressiveness were instrumental in making it possible for the objective to be held until reinforcements arrived.
His cheerful attitude and confidence inspired his men to their posts even when surrounded by the enemy."
