Near the end of November 1943 the Soviets began a major offensive in the area around Gomel. During these hard defensive battles Hauptmann Pabst, acting commander of the Pionier-Bataillon 296, distinguished himself through his bravery and steadfastness. His defensive achievements despite the most difficult of ground conditions (i.e. mud) were of great importance for the halting of a Soviet breakthrough attempt in the sector of the 296.
