The following newspaper article (dated 31.03.1943) describes why Neitzel received the Knight’s Cross…

“Korvettenkapitän Neitzel… has so far sunk 12 enemy merchant ships (with 92000 GRT) while serving as a U-Boat captain. Especially noteworthy among this captain’s outstanding achievements was one particular attack against a convoy off the northern coast of Brazil. Here he struck 8 merchant ships (with 55000 GRT) from the convoy."

The attack mentioned in the article was conducted against convoy BT-6 over the course of just 3 hours on 09.03.1943.
