Awarded on:
December 31st, 1942
London Gazette:
"For highest qualities of leadership, outstanding bravery, devotion to duty during the attack on Miteiriya Ridge, in the night of 23/24 October 1942."

Citation:
"This Engineer Officer commanded a gap-clearing party, worked unceasingly throughout the night in constant contact with the forward elements, locating and clearing several uncharted minefields.
Throughout the operation, in which he cleared six gaps through enemy mine-fields, some of considerable depth, he was under intense Artillery and Machinegun fire. Half his section became casualties; he lost a considerable portion of his stores.
Notwithstanding his heavy losses and the hidden danger of anti-personnel mines and booby traps, he spurred his depleted section on the renewed efforts by his personal example and bravery. In this way he materially assisted the infantry to achieve and reorganize on their objective.
Thereafter Lieutenant Shaw cleared booby traps which were liberally distributed over his area, and demarcated unfenced minefields.
This officer throughout the action displayed personal bravery tenacity and courage of the highest order, rallying his men to supreme efforts, and rendering the most conspicuous service."
