Citation
"Pvt Longaro was aboard a LCI. Survivors from a nearby sinking ship were being taken aboard this LCI by heaving lines. Almost all of the survivors had been rescued when it was noticed that one man, apparently injured, was floundering in the water approximately 75 yards away. As it was impossible to to heave a line to the man, Pvt. Longaro, with complete disregard for his own safety, and at great risk to his own life, dived into the oily water and swam, with a rope tied to himself, to the injured helpless sailor. After much difficulty, he succeeded in tying the rope around the injured man and himself. By keeping the injured man's head above water while they were being pulled to the rescue vessel, Pvt. Longaro saved the man from drowning. Pvt. Longaro's total disregard for his own safety, reflected great credit upon himself, and was an inspiration to his organization."
