Biography

Heinz Wilhelm Lettink moved with his mother to the Netherlands at the age of six and grew up in Schoonhoven. In 1937 he joined the Dutch Marine Corps and hide himzelf when the German occupier forced the dutch military in imprisonment. As a courier he joined the resistance in the local group of the "Landelijke Organisatie voor Hulp aan Onderduikers"(National grop for help to people who were hiding). After the Battle for Arnhem he crossed the Rhine but went back a few day later. On November 19th, 1944 he was taken prisoner and sentenced to death by the Germans. Together with Gijs Numan, he managed to escape afte a policeman gave them a pistol. Lettink went to Ede and becam the Sectie Commandant B.S.-S.G. (Section Commander) of the Dutch Internal Forces (Binnenlandse Stirjdkrachten).
He was killed in Veenendaal on May 7th, 1945 in a firefight with Dutch SS troopers who refused to surrender.
