For meritorious achievement in aerial flight as a Gunner of a Bomber Plan in Bombing Squadron EIGHTY attached to the U.S.S. TICONDEROGA in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of French Indo-China, January 12, 1945. Participating in an attack against enemy shipping, BARAN rendered invaluable assistance to his pilot who aided in sinking the entire convoy despite intense antiaircraft fire. His skill, courage, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
