He was severely wounded near Vitkowice on 17 September 1939, when his horse became entangled in barbed wire and fell, crushing and breaking his leg. Despite his wounds, he dismounted from his horse, switched to a 'tachanka' and reached Warsaw on the night of 19/20 September in one of the regimental cars.
