"On 6 June 44 Major SMITH was Unit Leading Officer for his regiment in the assault of the beaches near LA RIVIERE. He arrived on the beaches shortly after H Hour and while enemy mortar and small arms fire was still intense. In spite of this he carried out a careful reconnaissance of the beaches displaying complete indifference to enemy fire, and selected areas where the guns could deploy. Conditions on the beaches were extremely difficult owing to high sea and tide, uncleared enemy obstacles and mines. Major SMITH nevertheless made complete and skillful arrangements for landing the guns, which resulted in his regiment coming ashore without loss of men or vehicles and getting quickly into action. They were then able effectively to support the infantry at a critical stage. By his coolness and skill in difficult circumstances Major SMITH played a large part in the success of the assault."
