"The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist's Mate Second Class William H. Slaughter (NSN: 8895562), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Medical Corpsman, attached to the THIRD Marine Division, on Guam Island, on 24 July 1944. Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Slaughter, during his company's attack over the high ground overlooking a landing beach, distinguished himself by outstanding bravery in his efforts to aid a mortally wounded Marine. The wounded man was thirty five yards forward of Pharmacist's Mate Slaughter's position when his call for assistance was heard. Despite a warning that the area around the wounded man was under the fire of enemy machine guns and rifles, he with utter disregard for his own safety, started forward. He had gone but fifteen yards when he was hit in the left side by rifle fire. Disregarding his own injury and despite the intense enemy fire, he moved another twenty yards to the man's side to administer first aid. Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Slaughter displayed outstanding courage, initiative and devotion to duty. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
