"The battalion commanded by Captain Smirnykh bypassed the Koton fortified area with a deep maneuver and attacked the enemy from the rear. The battalion fought for 4 days straight while being almost encircled, and seized five bunkers, eliminated a large force of enemies and greatly facilitated the breakthrough of the fortified area by Soviet troops.

He died a hero's death in battle on 16 August 1945."
