He hass distinguished himself in combat against the enemy by performing eminent acts of courage and tact. As commander of Our Minelayer Prins van Oraje, being trapped in Tarakan harbor by a superior Japanese fleet, nonetheless attempting to courageously penetrate the enemy screen in the night of Janaury 11 to 12. His vessel was spotted however and, fighting against 3 enemy destroyers, went down with the loss of some hundred hands.
