Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Dienstplichtig Soldaat (Enlisted Private)
Unit:
2e Compagnie, 3e Bataljon, 8e Regiment Infanterie, Wapen der Infanterie
Awarded on:
May 29th, 1947
Recommendation:
The undersigned, dpl soldier Chotzen, Theodoor Max, 2-III-8 R.I. wishes to report that after the demise of Major Landzaat on the Grebbeberg on May 13, Captain Höping or Höpink, P.A.G.-8 R.I. (now in captivity) told undersigned he had recommended him for an honorable mention but that this recommendation might not have been passsed on due to the confusion in the Grebbe line.
The undersigned would be very much obliged and would consider it an encouragement for further fighting that this recommendation may be accepted. However, he deems it necessary to mention that during the last resistance in the Pavillion on the Grebbeberg, more comrades, belonging to various units (of which only Drummer W. Roos, 2-III-8 R.I. is known by name) have done their duty until the last (longer than undersigned who was forced, due to his injuries, to break of the fight before the demise of Major Landzaat), without this fact having been reported by their superiors.
In clarification of the above mentioned, undersigned adds that he, when his unit (section 3 of 2.III-8 R.I.) raised the white flag, dodged surrender and was able to join the small group (Captains Höping and Franssen (?) and 3 soldiers were recognized by him, in addition to an equal number on the top floor) in a little café (het Paviljoentje) that withstood a siege by German stormtroopers until their ammunition ran out. Then the opponents approached to within a few yards from the walls and quelled the resistance with handgrenades, causing undersigned to get hurt and to be pulled away by Captain Höping, who saw the Major die and considered further resistance useless.
