"For heroic achievement in connection with military operations from 10 March 1945 to 11 March 1945. The organization was given the assignment of repairing and maintaining the Ludendorf Bridge at Remagen, Germany. As Assistant Squad leader, Pfc. Friend displayed conspicuous gallantry under fire. With utter disregard for his personal safety he remained voluntarily at his task throughout extremely heavy enemy artillery shelling until he was killed, when an enemy shell made a direct hit upon his position. His devotion to duty, untiring efforts, outstanding courage and leadership, reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed forces of the United States."
