The following wartime excerpt describes why Sack received the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberfeldwebel Emil Sack… was awarded the Knight’s Cross in September 1941 and later promoted to Oberleutnant. As a Zugführer, he and his Grenadiers eliminated an enemy marching column, overpowered a battery that was still firing and turned 2 captured guns from the battery on their former owners. In doing so he was able to hold Soviet counterattacks at bay, which in turn enabled his Bataillon to disengage from the enemy as per orders.”
