Oberwachtmeister Roth distinguished himself during the defense of the tiny Grigoriopol-Dorozkoje-Pogreby bridgehead in early 1944. Here the 4. Gebirgs-Division was able to repel all the enemy attempts to demolish the bridgehead, with Roth playing a key role in the battle. For this he would receive the Knight’s Cross.
