"This NCO was No.2 at Lt. Ryan's canoe on the night of April 17/18 when his patrol destroyed a large enemy pontoon. Cpl. Kiernan who was experiencing his operational baptism displayed great skill and resolution in directing Lt. Ryan on to the target, and ensuring that the enemy received the full effects of the concentrated close range fir from the Vickers 'K'. He was also Lt. Ryan's No.2 when this officer destroyed two country craft on the night of May 17/16."
