Biography

Nico Beukers and his wife Adriana (Sjaan) provided help to Salomon and Anna Niekerk-Gazan during the German occupation of the Netherlands. They resided in Kostverlorenweg 8, Leidschendam.

Excerpt from the Beukers family history:

"In the bedroom above the flag, was a secret hiding place installed (...) during the last 9 months of WWII. To the right of the house a company of German anti air-craft artillery was stationed, and in the garage a number of soldiers were billeted. Some of them were Austrians. Every day at irregular times they came to fill cans of fresh water from the kitchen. One day the commander walked into the living room, where the family was having breakfast with the Niekerks. Thy got a terrible shock, but tried hard not to show it, and they thought they had succeeded, when after he said "bon appétit" and "auf wiedersehn", he returned to his quarters. Half an hour later he returned to "Vater Nico", who reluctantly went outside. There the officer told him that he had not seen anything. That he had a family back home and that Nico should be more careful. He added that he was a good soldier, not a Nazi, but that by the same token, he could have been one."

In the name of Mr. Beukers, a tree was planted in the Herdenkingswoud Westerweel in Israel.
