Joyce was originally a British fascist who fled to Germany in August 1940, where he received German citizenship that same year. Joyce took an active part in the German propaganda machine. In this position he was nicknamed "Lord Haw-Haw" by the English.

Joyce was hanged on January 3, 1946 for high treason.
