"Lieut-Colonel AM BARNE has commanded 4 H from 7 Nov 44 to date. During this time he commanded his Regiment in the front line in the area of MEZZANO (4743) from 15 Dec 44 to 3 Feb 45, and in addition had the task of re-organising and training two Squadrons of his Regiment with "Kangaroos". The latter necessitated involving a new tactical doctrine for which there was no precedent. Lieut-Colonel AM BARNE carried out these duties with exceptional ability.

At the start of the offensive on April 9 45, 4 H were deployed in support of NZ Division and 8 Indian Division, and with their Kangaroos ook a major share in the successful assault across the rivers SENIO and SANTERNO. Later under command of 2 Armoured Brigade they did exceptional work carrying infantry in armoured groups during the advance in the R. PO.

Lieut-Colonel AM BARNE has shown conspicious drive and energy in organising and controlling his Squadrons in support of these formations throughout the battle, and he is largely responsible for the production of a battle winner factor - Kangaroos - which proved to be of decisive importance."
Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
