Biography

Royce was born on July 12 1919 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, the son of Charles Morse Johns and Lenora Gladys Johns nee Anstett. They were married in 1919 in Humboldt Saskatchewan. He was married on December 29 1942 in Loon Lake Saskatchewan with Bernice A. Johns nee Astley of Loon Lake and their son was Royce Frederick Johns (1944). His brothers were Wayne Alden and Keith Charles Johns and his sisters were Anita Gladys Leswick and Yvonne Lorraine Pershick.

He was a student at the Technical Collegiate of the University of Saskatchewan and member of the Anglican Church. His sports were baseball, hockey, softball and basketball and his hobby was drafting.

He enlisted on January 3 1942 in Saskatoon Saskatchewan and he went thereafter on December 21 1943 overseas to the UK.

Royce was killed in action on Thursday October 5 1944 age 25 due to a crash at the Roman Catholic Church in Zevenaar after a successful attack on Freudenberg in Germany.

On his headstone: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS"

He served with the 439 Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force.
