Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Lance-Corporal
Unit:
"C" Company, Highland Light Infantry of Canada, 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, Canadian Army
Recommendation:
On the 4th January 1945, Lance-Corporal Allen Plumb MacMaster was a section commander in "C" Company, The Highland Light Infantry of Canada. His section had been detailed as part of a forty man fighting patrol, to probe the enemy defences on the Quer Dam near Nijmegen.
It was an extremely black night making movement very difficult. The patrol penetrated approximately 500 yards into enemy territory when it came under heavy machine gun fire. Lance-Corporal MacMaster was wounded in the right arm and had to be sent back for medical attention.
While passing through a section of men Lance-Corporal MacMaster stepped on a German "S" mine and heard the click of the mechanism. He shouted "S mine - take cover" and remained standing on the mine until it exploded blowing off his foot. The section of infantry meanwhile dropped to the ground and none of them was injured.
Lance-Corporal Allen Plumb MacMaster, already wounded, accepted serious injury to himself thereby preventing serious and certain casualties to his fellow soldiers.
This Non-Commissioned Officer's great presence of mind, self sacrifice and courage set a magnificent example to his comrades at arms.
