The Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire was instituted by Queen Victoria in 1878. There are three classes: Knight Grand Commander (GCIE), Knight Commander (KCIE) and Companion (CIE).
The badge is a gold five-petalled rose, enamelled in crimson with a green barb between each petal. In the centre an effigy of Queen Victoria on a gold background surrounded by a ribbon, edged and lettered in gold and, formerly bearing the legend "Victoria Imperatrix", nowadays the legend reads "Imperatricis Auspiciis"
The ribbon is 1.25" wide and coloured dark blue.
