The "Medaille Militaire" is Luxemburg’s highest decoration. It was instituted by Grand Duchess Charlotte on October 30th, 1945.
The award could be bestowed upon military personell of all ranks for outstanding services or extraordinary achievements.
The medal takes the form of a disc, made of bronze. The obverse depicts the effigy of Grand Duchess Charlotte, surrounded by the text: "CHARLOTTE, GRANDE-DUCHESSE DE LUXEMBOURG". The reverse depicts the Luxemburg national coat of arms, on the left the number 19, on the right the number 40, representing the year 1940.
