Ogilvy Medal

The officer who claimed first place in the exam to become a Torpedo Lieutenant was given the Ogilvy Medal at the Admiralty's discretion. The medal was awarded annually.

It was established in 1912 in honor of the late Captain Frederick Charles Ashley Ogilvy, R.N., who was in command of H.M.S. Natal when he passed away on December 18, 1909, from typhoid disease.

The medals were financed by dividends from around £240 donated by Royal Navy officers as well as some of Captain Ogilvy's friends and family. At the Admiralty's discretion, any money left over after expenses are paid may be given to the medal winner.
