Modern Portugal was established on October 5th, 1910 after a revolution which overthrow the constitutional monarchy. This first period, called the First Republic, ended in a military coup on May 28th, 1926, creating a military dictatorship. This was changed to a one party system dictatorship in 1933. In 1974, a military coup after the Carnation Revolution changed the system to a parliamentry democracy, which still excits today.
