During the Second World War, men and women served in the US Armed Forces. In 1940 US society was segregated, with separate facilities, schools and neighborhoods for people of different races. Also, the US Military was segregated and Black Americans served in special units. This segregation even extended the facilities supporting these soldiers.

In the case of the segregated Tuskegee Army Air Force, located near the Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, Black nurses took care of the pilots and crew in training there. Just like at other bases, the soldiers could get sick, were injured in accidents or training mishaps. These sick and injured people needed help and Black nurses took care of these patients. People training there later went on to the 332nd Fighter Group or the 477th Bombardment Group.

Louise Lomax, the mother of Pia Marie Winters Jordan, is one of the Black Nurses who served at the Tuskegee Army Air Force base. She was one of the twenty-eight women stationed there and took care of the patients at the base. In her book, Winters Jordan pays homage to all these women, who played a crucial role in supporting the Tuskegee Airmen.

The Black nurses, like the Tuskegee Airmen, needed to prove themselves of being just as capable as white people. In addition, the women were sometimes doubted due to their gender, making the situation even more challenging for them. The aspect that truly stood out to me was the author's heartfelt dedication to portraying her mother's experiences and the collective efforts of these unsung heroines.

In essence, "Memories of a Tuskegee Airmen Nurse and Her Military Sisters" enriches our understanding of a lesser-known aspect of World War II history. The inclusion of interviews and personal accounts from some of the nurses adds depth to the narrative. This book is not only a captivating read but also a valuable contribution to historical literature. Highly recommended for those interested in exploring this significant chapter of American history.
