HOLLAND | 1-21 | During this period no event of major interest or importance occurred. The Bde's job was left flank protection of the Div Centre Line running from VEGHEL up to OSS. For this purpose all pls were placed under command of the Bns in the Bde and carried out harassing tasks as and when requested. With the exception of 12 Pl each Pl was pulled out of the line for 48 hrs maintenance and rest and the Pl which was out of the line was used for harassing task if it was needed. Men were sent at the rate of 2 per day to EINDHOVEN for 24 hrs leave and all Pl Comd's had 48 hrs leave in BRUSSELS. Mobile Baths were made available in UDEN and VEGHEL and ENSA and cinema shows took place in VEGHEL. | ||
22 | For ops see App “E” No.1 The Coy was given the task of left flank protection to the Bde. For this job we were given two MMG Pls from the Rifle Bde and an MMG Pl from 1st Bn Middlesex. We also had 15 Pl still under our comd. Lieut. Manser was fatally wounded by a mine over which his carrier went whilst overtaking another vehicle and died shortly after being admitted to hospital. | |||
23 | MIDDLERODE was cleared up and the Bns advanced to their final objectives. | |||
24 | Bns remained and consolidated on their objectives and were relieved by 15 (S) Div. | |||
25 | See App “E” No.2. No move of the Bde took place. | |||
26 | We moved off at 0900 hrs with all Pls save 13 & 14 who were under comd of 1/5 and 1/6 Queens respectively. On arrival at our harbour area (see App “A”) 14 Pl came back under comd and 12 and 15 both set off to join 1/5 Queens but owing to night were unable to take up a position in time. | |||
27 | 15 Pl passed first to 1/6 Queens and took up positions with 1 Sec at 237404 and 1 Sec at 239407 and then came back under our comd. They never fired a shot. 13 Pl proceeded with 1/5 Queens to area UDENHOUT and 12 and 14 Pls came back under comd. | |||
28 | 13 Pl remained with 1/5 Queens and Coy moved again. See App “A” | |||
29 | At 1630 hrs we moved off with 12, 14 & 15 Pls to area of HEIKANT 1635. | |||
29 | 13 Pl remained with 1/5 Queens. News reached us that BREDA and TILBURG had fallen and that 15 (S) Div and 4 Armd Bde who were working on our left flank had been taken away to the VENLO front. | |||
30 | 13 Pl remained under command of 1/5 Queens who took DONGEN. Coy HQ moved at 1300 hrs. | |||
31 | Coy moved to KAATSHEUVEL area 1345 – MMG Pls all under command – Mortar Pl (12) under comd 1/5 Queens. Pls moved to their locations but did not put Guns on ground as operational responsibility does not start until tomorrow. For Locations etc, See App “A”. |
