16 | The main problem of the operation was the crossing of MOLENBEEK, a stream, at places 25 ft across, that wanders in a sandy bed from SW of VENRAY Northeastwards in a wide arc across the Div front. Owing to heavy rain the previous night the going in the vicinity of the BEEK was extremely difficult and although attempts were made by means of Bridgelayers and fascines to get the tanks across, the only really successful crossing was made on the 185 Bde front via the bridge 766294. The attack lost momentum due largely to this obstacle and the infantry of both Bdes met heavy mortar and arty fire coming from the NE and WEST suburbs of the town. |
