After Ricky succeed in Dogs Trainingsschool in Hertfordshire, he was assigned to the 279th Field Company of the 15th Scottish Division to detect mines. Ricky's mentor was Maurice Yelding. On the 3th of December 1944 Richy went detecting mines among the Noordervaart in Nederweert, when one mine exploded and his mentor got injured. Ricky remained very calm, and went looking for help. He lead some people savely through the minefield to his infured mentor. Another group of soldiers were also unharmed because of Ricky's calm behaviour. On the 29th of March, 1947 Ricky got the Dickin Medal for all this.
