    Period:
    Second World War (1939-1945)
    Rank:
    Bombardier
    Awarded on:
    December 22nd, 1945
"Bombardier George William Bentley was in charge of the line party at the time when 1 Canadian Medium Regiment, in close support of the 49 (West Riding) Infantry Division (British) was ordered to cross the NEDER RIJN and take ARNHEM.
On 12 April 1945 the unit was given twenty minutes to register a target which had just been revealed and which might lead to the success of the operation if engaged immediately.
During registration, heavy concentrations of enemy shell fire fell around HUISSEN map reference 7672 destroying the line communication. Bombardier Bentley, regardless of danger to himself, replaced 50 yards of line, re-establishing communications and thus permitting the registration to be completed. The target was subsequently engaged in the fire plan and completely neutralized.
This incident is one of many in which this non commissioned officer has shown a devotion to duty of highest order. His conscientiousness and dependability were constant factors in the many tasks allotted to him and all his duties were carried out promptly, and efficiently regardless of the discomfort, danger or strain involved."
