"On the 13th of October 1944, near WOENSDRECHT, HOLLAND, the battalion attacked and, coming under observed enemy artillery and machine gun fire, suffered very heavy casualties. Sergeant Caldwell, an anti-tank gun section commander, seeing that, owing to the nature of the ground, it was impossible to deploy his gun, volunteered to lead his section in an effort to remove the casualties.
Working in complete darkness, crawling through deep mud over group constantly under enemy artillery and small arms fire, Sergeant Caldwell courageously and untiringly led and encouraged his section until every casualty was removed from the position, not a man was left behind.
When handling his guns Sergeant Caldwell has always shown the greatest fortitude and aggressiveness, regardless of the intensity of enemy fire, and has been a constant source of inspiration to those serving with him."
