Biography

96 Company (Troop Carrying) RASC 'C' Platoon logbook revealed the sad death of one of their Drivers. The 'C' Platoon log entry for 14 November 1944 is as follows in italics:

0415 hours the American 82 Division 508 Battalion Infantry were embussed, and the column moved off at 0500 hours. The column arrived at SISSONNE, France, at Map reference O/2215. The mileage of the lift was 176 miles. On route, driver Steinberg (T/13094351) skidded at Map reference O/2920, resulting in several casualties, including the death of Driver Michie (T/6213732).

All three 96 Company Platoons carried out this operation, transporting the American 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division from Bourg Leopold, Belgium, 176 miles to the American Champion Camp at Sissonne, France. The American's return to their base ended their participation in the assault on Holland during Operation Market Garden. The operation began in mid-September, and the 82nd Airborne Division was freed from duty on 13 November after 56 days of fighting. The location of the crash was just between Dizy-le-Gros and Lappion on the current D18 in France.

Andrew Gordon Michie was born in the Liverpool area of Lancashire on 8 February 1916, the son of Archibald Johnston Michie and his wife, Jessie. The 1939 Register for England & Wales shows Andrew living with his parents and sister Elizabeth at 17 Victoria Crescent, Alnwick, Northumberland; his occupation is described as a Road Cost Clerk and Timekeeper. The National Probate Calendar records Andrew's address as 5 Bellegrove Parade Welling, Kent.

Andrew died at age 28 and was buried at Plot 16, Row 11, Grave 5 at the Clichy Northern Cemetery, located on the outskirt of Paris. Andrew's life is remembered on the town war memorial in Alnwick, Northumberland.
