Norman was born on December 6 1914 in Durban Manitoba, the son of George William Reid and Janet Reid nee McIntyre of Durban Manitoba. They were married on March 9 1904 in Durban. His brothers were George Edwards and Gordon Franklin Reid and his sisters were Jean Elizabeth Reid, Mrs. Margaret L. Smith and Sylvia Marion (also in the army) Reid.

He was a machine runner and member of the United Church. His sports were hockey, softball and swimming and his hobbies were flying and photography.
He enlisted on June 20 1940 in Fort William Ontario and he went thereafter on December 18 1942 overseas to the UK.

Norman was killed in action on Wednesday June 23 1943 age 28 due to a crash at the hamlet of Bronsbergen near the river IJssel near Zutphen before or after an attack on Mülheim in Germany. The other fallen RCAF crew members were F/O Armand A. Pariseau age 31 in grave E-14-17, Sgt Norman F. Notley age 20 in grave E-14-17, F/O Byron M. Gracie age 23 in grave E-13 and F/Sgt Harry P. Heximer age 29 in grave E-12. The other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew members were Sgt Durston Mann age 21 in grave E-14-17 and Sgt Peter B. Robinson age 21 in grave E-18.

He served with the 427 Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force.
