John was born on September 11 1920 in Burnaby British Columbia, the son of Percy Llewellyn Owen and Julia Ada Owen nee Gaunt (both English) of Comox, British Columbia. They were married on October 14 1909 in Letherbridge Alberta.
His brother was Hubert Stanley Owen. His sisters were Mrs. Wilfred R. Smith (Evelyn Frances), Mrs. Douglas Hamilton (Elsie Florence), Mrs. Philip Richardson (Eileen Julia), Mrs. Gordon Dark (Annie Priscilla) and Mrs. James Albrecht (Edith Marian).
He was a bookkeeper and member of the United Church and he spoke English and a little French. His sports were badminton, tennis, basketball and swimming and his hobby was collecting stamps.
He enlisted on October 10 1941 in Vancouver and he went thereafter on December 18 1942 overseas to the UK.
Warrant Officer Class II John David Owen was killed in action on Saturday March 25 1944 age 23 due to a crash at the Binnenveldseweg (now Molenhoek-Zuid) in Tubbergen before or after an attack on Berlin in Germany.
The other fallen RCAF crew member was F/Sgt Harry W. Nixon age 28 in grave 1 and the other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew members were Sgt Wilfred H. Broadmore age 21 in grave 6, Sgt John C.A.D. Lavender age 20 in grave 4, Sgt Percival H. Simpkin age 22 in grave 5 and Sgt William Clark age 22 in grave 2.
The other RCAF crew member W/O. II F.B. Magee survived the crash and he could evade then.
He served with the 625 Sqdn Royal Air Force.
