Biography

Douglas was born on August 13 1922 in Miami Manitoba, the son of William Newlands Cameron (Scottish) and Pearlie May Cameron nee Bowser (deceased in 1932) of Winnipeg. They were married on August 8 1920 in Winnipeg.

He was married on March 25 1944 in London England with Denise Maud Cameron nee Meyer of Whitton, Twickenham Middlesex England and later Winnipeg. They had one son Douglas Newlands Cameron (December 30 1944).

His sister was Mrs. Irene Chambers.

He was a student and member of the United Church.

His hobby was building model planes and his sports were track & field, skiing and baseball.

He served as a L/Cpl from June 27 1940 till June 26 1941 with the Winnipeg Light Infantry (MG) of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of Canada. He enlisted on June 27 1941 then the RCAF in Winnipeg and he the date is unknown when he went thereafter overseas to the UK.

Douglas was killed in action on Saturday June 17 1944 age 21 due to a crash at the village of Spijk, municipality Herwen en Aerdt before or after an attack on Sterkrade near Oberhausen in Germany.

The other fallen RCAF crew member was F/O John W. Collyer age in grave A-16.
The other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew members were Sgt David H. Hooper age 19 in grave A-14, F/Lt Benjamin R. Robinson (DFC) age 30 in grave A-15, Sgt Leslie E. Basford age 23 in grave A-13, F/O John W. Summers age 38 in grave A-10 and Sgt Kenneth D. Blyth age 34 in grave A-11.

He served with the 640 (R.A.F.) Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force.
