"On the 18th February 1945 during Operation VERITABLE, the advance of the Battalion through the heavily wooded country that sweeps down to GOCH, was constantly hampered by machine gun fire. When one platoon was pinned down by fire from four spandaus, well concentrated and at close range, Private ROSSER, No. 1 on the 2" mortar, without waiting for any orders, worked his way forward utterly regardless of the great risks he ran, to a suitable position from which to engage the enemy. Then with great coolness he brought down most accurate fire and silenced one enemy Spandau completely and caused the others to fire spasmodically and high. In addition to this Private ROSSER shouted and encouraged the point section to advance which under his direction they did, and the platoon advance continued. During the whole operation this man's action and example were an inspiration to his comrades in battle. In this particular instance his splendid initiative and disregard for his own safety inspired his platoon with a confidence they had momentarily lost, and restored the impetus of the battalion's advance."
