Biography

Fritz Kühn finally reached the rank of General der Panzertruppen. He was killed in a bomraid on Berlin on 15th February 1944. The general was the Chef des Kraftfahrzeugwesens und der Heeresmotorisierung at that time.

The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Kühn received the Knight’s Cross…

“Generalmajor Fritz Kühn and his Panzer-Brigade achieved notable success during the breakthrough of the Dyle Position. During this time he and his men assaulted the active French artillery units at St. Gery and destroyed 10 French tanks during a further thrust near Tilly. On the 05.06.1940 the Brigade punched through the bitterly defended Weygand position to a depth of 15 km in the area southwest of Péronne. In the process the unit eliminated 5 French batteries (including 3 heavy ones) and thereby silenced their fire. This brought decisive relief for the continued attack and breakthrough.”
