Citation:
"Whilst piloting his machine during a hostile air raid he displayed great determination and skill in manoeuvring at a height of 11,000 feet under heavy enemy fire, which enabled his Observer to bring effective fire on an enemy aeroplane, resulting in its being driven to the ground."

For shooting down the Gotha GV/979/16 from Kampfgruppe 3/17 during the night of 19 and 20 May 1918. In this Vizefeldwebel Albrecht Sachtler (pilot) and Leutnant Joachim Flathow (observer) were killed in action and Unteroffizier Hermann Tache (gunner) was taken prisoner of war.
