Biography

Roy Swinney was born in Scarborough and attended Roundhay School before becoming a mechanic at Armstrong Siddeley Motors in Roseville Road. He joined the RAF in February 1939 and trained as a radio operator. He served with several units before being transferred to Takoradi and may have been involved in the crossing of aircraft from there to Egypt through the desert. In 1942, he began his bomber training before joining 156 Squadron at RAF Warboys in February 1943, a member of 8 Group Pathfinders, until his death on his 45th mission on 14 January 1944.

That night, 498 aircraft took part in the raid of which 38 were lost, 5 from 156 Squadron including ND357 which fell victim to a night fighter. The crew were originally buried at Huisduinen but they were all reburied at Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery.

Pictured is Roy Swinney with his DFC awarded on 19 October 1943, the same date WO Lawrance received his DFM and four days before WC Mansfield received his DFC. He also wears his Pathfinder badge.’

He is also commemorated on a war memorial in Scarborough and on a plaque in Bardsey
