After the commander of the I./Panzer-Regiment 35, Hauptmann Grohe, had been badly wounded Küspert was assigned command of the battalion. Under his leadership the battalion, which consisted of Panther tanks, was able to advance to a point just before Doblen. On the 18.09.1944 several T-34s, 2 assault guns, 15 Pak and several other guns were destroyed by the Abteilung. A few weeks later Küspert would himself be wounded. For his achievements during his temporary command of the Abteilung he would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
