"From the moment the 8th Battalion went into action he has conducted himself very bravely. In the morning hours of 20 August 1944, he took part in an attack on the Germans, who were approaching under cover of a hedge, several steps from 2nd Platoon and, from a heavy machine gun (HMG), were shooting at No. 3 Company. The above-mentioned ran to a distance of about 5 metres from the enemy and commenced to fire with his rifle. He stayed in position until his ammunition ran out, forcing the Germans to retreat [though] after this [a German hit him with] a rifle-butt on the head and with the rest he moved back to his Company. Under fire he helped to carry away a wounded comrade."
