Hendrik Voorspuij was captain on board the s.s. Simon Bolivar.

The Simon Bolivar left Amsterdam on November 17, 1939, bound for Curaçao. There were 397 people on board, including 263 passengers. The next morning, after the lightship Sunk had passed, the ship struck a mine twice in quick succession. The Simon Bolivar sank, 21 crew members, including Captain Voorspuij, and 59 passengers lost their lives. Henrik Voorspuij's body was never found.
