Biography

Jonkheer Ernst Johannes Baptista Maria von Bönninghausen tot Herinkhave was born in 1900 in Heemstede.

Von Bönninghausen studied law in Nijmegen and established himself as a lawyer and attorney in Enschede from 1931 to 1940. From 1931 he was a member of the municipal council of Tubbergen on behalf of the Roman Catholic State Party (RKSP). After a personal conflict with the RKSP, von Bönninghausen joined the NSB in April 1935. He was soon appointed as Authorized Representative [of the Leader] in Special Service and from 1937 he was an NSB senator in the Senate.

During the German occupation he was mayor of Hilversum and Tubbergen. He married Baroness Ally thoe Schwartzenberg and Hohenlansberg on 23 October 1941.

Von Bönninghausen was sentenced to two years in prison in 1947 for forgery. By signing a false signature after the war, he appropriated part of the Von Bönninghausen family estate. Von Bönninghausen was an accountant after his conviction and died at the age of 73 in 1973.
