Biography

Augustinus (August) Borggreven was born in 1899 in Wisch. He was a butter and egg importer by profession. Borggreven is best known for his long-running conflict with mayor Joost Boot. He was Roman Catholic, but was excommunicated because of his NSB background.

Borggreven, who became a member of the NSB in 1933, rose to the position of Authorised Representative [of the Leader] in Special Service within a few years. On the advice of Generalkommissar Schmidt, he was appointed Plenipotentiary of Eastern Affairs in January 1942. In that role, Borggreven was committed to recruiting workers for the Werkdienst Holland/Werkdienst-Ukraine. Borggreven and Rost van Tonningen soon became involved in a conflict of interest over the activities of Borggreven's Centrale terbehartiging van Ondernemingen in het Oosten (COO), as is evident from notes drawn up by Rost on 20 August 1942. The COO broke the monopoly of the Nederlandsche Oost Compagnie (NCO), which had been founded by Rost. Rost calls Borggreven incompetent and it is clear that he had little regard for the Achterhoek trader. In the end, Rost came out on top and Borggreven was pushed out of the eastern affairs.

Borggreven became NSB district leader of the Gelderse Achterhoek on 22 March 1943.

After the war, Borggreven was sentenced to five years in prison.
